The Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research (Baseera) conducted its periodic poll about the approval rating of the president, observing changes in the Egyptian’s assessment of the president’s performance after 22 months in office.

The poll’s results indicate that at the end of President al-Sisi’s 22nd month in office the percentage of those who approve of the president’s performance was 79% with 13% disapproving and 8% undecided, signaling a drop in the president’s approval rate from the 90% he received the end of his first year in office.

The poll shows that the president’s approval rating has slipped across all sections of society compared to his first year in power. Those with university education are the least satisfied with the president’s performance, with 73% saying they approve of his performance, compared with 84% among people with less than intermediate education. It is worth noting that the approval rating among those who have university education was 89% at the end of al-Sisi’s first year in office.

The poll also indicates that the approval rating among youths is less than that among the older Egyptians, with 71% of the youths aged less than 30 years approved of the president’s performance, compared with 87% among those aged 50 or above.

Offering reasons for their approval of the president’s performance, 30% of those surveyed referred to the Suez Canal project and other new projects, while 25% said that the president is promoting the country’s interests and that the situation in Egypt has improved. Others cited the country’s stability and security, with 16% saying that security has improved, and 6% noting that the president kept Egypt away from the perils of war and foreign intervention.

Asked if they would elect al-Sisi if presidential elections were to be held tomorrow, 69% said they would, down from 85% at the end of his first year in office. About 14% said that they would not elect him, while 17% said that their decision would depend on who would run against him.

The percentage of those willing to elect al-Sisi if presidential elections were to be held tomorrow is higher among those with less than intermediate education (77%) than among those with university education (56%). Among youths aged less than 30 years, 61% said they would reelect al-Sisi.

Methodology:

The poll was conducted using both mobile phones and landlines on a sample of 1541citizens aged 18 years old and above, and covering all governorates. All phone interviews were conducted from 18 to 20 April, 2016. The response rate was around 46%, and the margin of error in the results is less than 3%. The poll was self-funded by Baseera as a part of its social responsibility activities.
