The Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research (baseera) conducted a poll, with the support of the European Union delegation to Egypt, about Egyptians' knowledge of COVID-19 and how to protect themselves from the virus and its impact on their lives. The results showed that almost all Egyptians had heard of the Corona virus. With regard to their knowledge of the symptoms of the disease, 74% of Egyptians mentioned fever followed by a dry or strong cough with 47%, then a sore throat with 36%, and a respiratory disorder with 20%, about 21% reported that COVID-19 cause the same as those of the flu, while 10% said that they do not know the symptoms. The knowledge of the symptoms increases with the increase of the respondents’ educational level.

Regarding what Egyptians do to protect themselves from infection with the Corona virus, 68% answered that they use antiseptics while 39% stay home, 15% avoid being in crowded places, and 3% avoid dealing with infected individuals.

Around 61% of Egyptians confirmed that they made changes in their lifestyle after the appearance of the Corona virus, and this percentage increases from 52% among those with less than intermediate education to 76% among those with university education or higher. On the government's decision to announce the partial curfew, 88% of Egyptians indicated that they agree with this decision and less than 8% rejected the decision, while 5% said they could not decide. About 23% of Egyptians indicated that they faced problems as a result of the partial curfew, while 77% did not face any problems. Around 28% of those who faced problems stated that the most important problem is that their business has been negatively affected by the curfew, followed by a decrease in working hours that was mentioned by 25% of the respondents, then the inability to live normally with 15%, then streets crowed before the curfew time with 5%, then the limited health services available with 4%.

Asking employed respondents on the work environment after the emergence of the Corona virus, 55% of them answered that workplaces provides them with antiseptics and hand sanitizers in an appropriate manner. This percentage increases from 52% among workers in the private sector to 57% among workers in the government sector. Around 53% of employed people confirmed that their workplace had reduced the days they work from their workplace and allowed them to work from home. This percentage increases from 49% among those who work in the private sector to 65% among those who work in the government sector. It increases from 50% among males to 68% among females.

Women who are working and have children under 12 years old were asked whether they were allowed to take leave as per the government decision, 42% of them answered that they were allowed to do so while 58% were not allowed to do so.

The survey was conducted using a landline phones and mobile phones on a sample of 2157 Egyptians, in the age group of 18 years or above, covering all the governorates of the Republic. The interviews were conducted from April 14th to April 25th, 2020. The response rate was about 78%, with a margin of error less than 3%. The poll was funded by the European Union delegation to Egypt.
