- About 68% of Egyptians approve of President al-Sisi’s performance

- 59% of Egyptians intend to re-elect the president

The Egyptian Center for Public Opinion Research (Baseera) conducted its periodic poll about the approval rating of the president, observing changes in the Egyptian’s assessment of the president’s performance after 28 months in office.

The poll involved questions about the president’s performance and voting for him if the elections were to be held tomorrow.

The poll showed that the president’s approval rating dropped to 68% compared to 82% at the end of his 26th month in office. The percentage of those who disapprove of the president’s performance at the end of his 28th month in office was 24%, while 8% of the respondents were undecided. The approval rating has decreased among Egyptians with different education levels and in different age groups if compared to the observed levels 2 months ago.

The president’s approval rating didn’t differ according to the education level while it differed according to age. The approval rating reached 82% among those aged 50 years or more compared to 50% among youth less than 30 years.

The reasons the respondents cited for their approval of the president’s performance echoed those noted in earlier polls, with the Suez Canal project cited as the main reason for approval with 19%, compared to 32% in August 2016, followed by improved security (18%), improvements in the country’s conditions (11%), improvements in roads and bridges (9%) and social housing projects (7%). Around 22% were unable to cite a reason for their approval.

As for the reasons for disapproval, these included high prices with 74% compared to 53% in August 2016, unemployment (13%), the lack of improvements in the country’s conditions (12%), the deterioration in the country’s economic status and the lack of social justice with 4% each.

Asked if they would elect al-Sisi if elections were to be held tomorrow, about 59% of respondents said they would, while 20% said they would not and 21% said that their decision would depend on who else is in the race. It is worth noting that at the end of al-Sisi’s second year in office the percentage of those who were willing to elect him was 81%.

Egyptians who aged 50 or more have the highest tendency to elect al-Sisi if presidential elections were to be held tomorrow. The percentage of those who would elect him reached 77% among those aged 50 or more compared to 41% among youths less than 30 of age. The percentage of those willing to elect al-Sisi was 53% among those with university education compared to 63% among those with less than intermediate education.

Methodology:

The poll was conducted using both mobile phones and landlines on a sample of 1520 citizens aged 18 years old and above, and covering all governorates. All phone interviews were conducted from 17 to 18 October, 2016. The response rate was around 48%, and the margin of error in the results is less than 3%. The poll was self-funded by Baseera as a part of its social responsibility activities.
